Vaginal Discharge Color and Odor Checklist

A no-diagnosis checklist for discharge color, smell, texture, itching, burning, pelvic pain, bleeding, and care questions.

Color and smell can help you describe discharge.

They should not be used as a diagnosis chart. The same color can have more than one cause. A clinician may need an exam or lab test.

Use this with the period discharge guide, the discharge before period guide, and the cervical mucus guide.

This page is educational. It is not medical advice.

Color and smell note

Fill this in when you notice a change.

Question Your note Date Cycle day Color you saw Smell words Texture Amount Itching or burning Pelvic pain Bleeding or spotting Pregnancy or STI concern

Use your own words. "New for me" is a useful note.

Checklist for changes

Check any item that fits.

Color changed from my usual pattern. Smell is strong, fishy, or new for me. Texture is clumpy, foamy, or new for me. Amount is much more than usual. Itching started. Burning started. Pelvic pain started. Pain when peeing started. Bleeding or spotting showed up. I have a pregnancy concern. I have an STI concern. I used a new soap, wipe, lube, condom, or product. I used medicine or an over the counter product.

This checklist does not tell you the cause. It helps you tell the story clearly.

Words to use

Plain words help more than guesses.

What you notice Words you can use Color clear, white, yellow, green, gray, pink, brown Smell none, mild, strong, fishy, sour, new for me Texture watery, creamy, sticky, thick, clumpy, foamy Amount none, little, usual, more than usual Symptoms itch, burn, swelling, pelvic pain, pain when peeing

Do not match these words to a diagnosis. Bring them to care if you are worried.

Questions for a clinician

Pick the questions that fit.

Do my notes suggest I need an exam? Do I need a lab test? Could this be vaginitis? Could this be BV, yeast, or another infection? Could cervicitis or an STI need to be checked? Could a product or irritant be part of this? What symptoms mean I should seek care sooner? What should I track if this happens again?

If you are worried about BV, use the BV symptom visit prep checklist. If yeast keeps coming up, use the recurrent yeast infection appointment prep.
