Spotting Instead of Period Notes

A plain note sheet for spotting instead of a period, negative pregnancy test timing, flow, color, symptoms, cycle day, and care questions.

Use this note sheet when you expected a period but saw spotting.

It also works if you took a pregnancy test.

A negative test is a result from that test at that time.

It does not explain the spotting.

These notes cannot tell the cause.

They cannot diagnose pregnancy.

They cannot rule out every health concern.

If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, or faintness, you can ask for care before finishing the note sheet.

Start here

Fill this out first.

Question Your note Expected period date Date spotting started Cycle day, if known Last full period start date Spotting color pink / red / brown / rust / mixed Amount wiping only / underwear mark / liner / light flow Did flow build? no / yes / not sure Pregnancy test date, if relevant Pregnancy test result, if relevant negative / positive / unclear / not taken Pain, 0 to 10 Other symptoms Birth control or medicine change Main concern

Keep the words simple.

"Brown spotting, no flow" is useful.

"Negative test two days before expected period" is useful too.

Daily spotting notes

Use one row per day.

Date Cycle day Spotting amount Color Flow built? Test taken? Pain 0 to 10 Other symptoms What happened next : : wiping only / underwear mark / liner / light flow pink / red / brown / rust / mixed no / yes / not sure no / yes

MedlinePlus says bleeding between periods can have many causes.

Pregnancy, hormones, medicines, and infection are some examples.

Your notes do not tell which cause fits.

They help you explain the pattern.

Spotting or period

Use this if you are not sure what to call it.

Question Your note Did bleeding stay very light? Did it build into flow? Did you need a pad, tampon, cup, or disc? Did it stop after one day? Did it stop and start again? Did full flow start later?

Spotting is usually too light for a pad or tampon.

A period often has enough flow to need products.

For more detail, read spotting vs period.

For spotting before flow, read spotting before period.

Test timing notes

Use this section only if pregnancy testing is part of your question.

Test detail Your note Test brand or type Test date Time of day Days before or after expected period Result negative / positive / unclear Did you repeat it? no / yes What the test label said to do next

This sheet does not give pregnancy advice.

It does not tell you when to test again.

Follow the test label.

A clinician can help if you are unsure.

Pattern checklist

Check what fits.

Spotting happened instead of full flow. Spotting started before the expected period. Spotting stayed very light. Spotting stopped, then came back. Full flow started later. I took a pregnancy test. I changed birth control or hormone medicine. I missed pills or changed timing. I had new pelvic pain. I had other symptoms I want to ask about. I had bleeding after sex. I feel worried by this change.

This checklist is for notes only.

It cannot tell the cause.

ACOG says changes in amount, timing, or length can matter.

Visit prep

Pick the questions you want to ask.

Does this count as spotting or a period? Should I count any day as day 1? Does my test timing change what I should do next? What symptoms should I track if this happens again? Could birth control changes matter here? What changes mean I should ask for care sooner? Should I bring one cycle or more than one cycle? Would a short export help?

For birth control changes, read birth control period changes.

Use the period starts and stops log if flow comes and goes.

Use one day period notes if bleeding lasted one day.

One page summary

Fill this in before a visit or message.

Summary item Your note Expected period date Spotting started Last full period started Spotting color and amount Did full flow start? Test date and result, if relevant Pain score Other symptoms Birth control or medicine change Main care question

Share only what fits the visit.

A short summary may be enough.

Use the abnormal bleeding diary if you also have heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after sex.

Privacy note

Spotting notes can include sex, pregnancy tests, birth control, and care plans.

Keep the smallest useful record.

Floriva can keep short notes on your device.

Paper works too.
