HRT Discussion Question List

A plain question list for discussing hormone therapy with a clinician, including goals, symptoms, bleeding history, health history, risks, follow-up, and tracking.

Use this list when you want to ask about hormone therapy. Bring it to an OB GYN, primary care doctor, or menopause care visit.

This page is for learning. It is not medical advice. It does not say hormone therapy is right for you. It does not give dose or product advice.

Start with your goal

Write the problem you want help with.

Goal Your notes Hot flashes Night sweats Broken sleep Mood changes Brain fog Vaginal dryness Pain with sex Urine symptoms Bleeding changes Other goal

Ask which goals hormone therapy may help. Ask which goals may need another plan.

Questions about fit

Bring these questions to the visit.

Do my symptoms fit menopause or perimenopause? Could another health issue explain them? Is hormone therapy an option for me? Is there a reason it may not be a good fit? What are the possible benefits for my symptoms? What risks apply to my health history? What side effects should I watch for? What are non hormone options I should know about? What happens if I choose not to use hormone therapy now?

You can ask these questions without deciding that day.

Bleeding history to bring

Bleeding matters before and during any hormone talk.

Question Your notes Last period start date Usual cycle length now Longest gap between periods Any spotting between periods Any bleeding after sex Any heavy bleeding Any bleeding after 12 months with no period Current birth control or hormones

Ask what bleeding needs to be checked before a plan starts. Ask what bleeding should be reported later.

Health history questions

Use this section to make the visit safer and clearer.

Does my age change the risk and benefit discussion? Does my time since last period matter? Does my blood pressure matter? Does migraine history matter? Does clot, stroke, or heart history matter? Does breast cancer or uterine cancer history matter? Does liver disease matter? Does my family history matter? Do my current medicines or supplements matter? Do I still need birth control?

If a question feels sensitive, you can write it down and hand it over.

Risk questions

Ask for plain answers.

What are the common side effects? What rare but serious risks should I know? Which risks are higher for me? Which risks are lower for me? What symptoms should make me call right away? What changes would make us stop or rethink the plan? How will we know if the benefits are worth it? How often should we review the plan?

ACOG says risks and benefits can vary by person. Your own health history matters.

Follow up questions

Before you leave, ask how follow up will work.

Question Answer When should I check in again? What should I track before then? What side effects should I report? What bleeding should I report? Who do I contact with questions? What should I do if symptoms do not improve?

Do not change or stop medicine without asking your clinician.

What to track

Track the same few things each day or week.

Track Why it helps Hot flashes Shows frequency and pattern. Night sweats Shows sleep impact. Sleep Shows whether nights are changing. Mood Shows daily impact. Brain fog Shows work and life impact. Vaginal or sex symptoms Shows comfort changes if you want to track them. Bleeding Shows spotting, flow, or timing changes. Side effects Shows what started after a change.

Use paper, a note, or a private tracker. Floriva can keep cycle and symptom notes on your device. Bring only what you want to share.

Short script

Use this if you want a simple opener.

"I want to talk about hormone therapy. My main symptoms are . They affect . My bleeding pattern is . My health history includes . I want to know the benefits and risks."

You are allowed to ask for time. You are allowed to ask for another visit. A good plan should fit your symptoms, history, and comfort level.
