Heavy Period Iron Test Question List

A plain question list for heavy periods, low energy, CBC, blood iron, ferritin, and what to ask before a lab visit.

Heavy periods can make lab questions feel big.

This sheet keeps the questions small.

It does not read your labs.

Bring this note

Fill in what you know.

Prompt Your note Period start date Bleeding days Heaviest day Fastest pad or tampon change Clots or leaks Fatigue or low energy Dizziness or weakness Shortness of breath Past lab dates, if any Main lab question

Use plain words.

"Day two was heavy. I felt weak after stairs." is enough.

Iron lab questions

Pick the questions that fit.

Does my bleeding pattern matter here? Do my symptoms change what labs we discuss? Should we talk about a CBC? Should we talk about hemoglobin? Should we talk about blood iron? Should we talk about ferritin? Should I bring my flow log? What symptom should make me call sooner? When and how will I get the results? Who will explain the results to me?

NHLBI says CBC, hemoglobin, blood iron, and ferritin may be checked when a clinician looks for iron deficiency anemia.

Ask your clinician which tests fit your case.

Heavy bleeding details

CDC says heavy menstrual bleeding can include bleeding longer than 7 days.

It can also include clots or needing a new pad or tampon after less than 2 hours.

Use this table if those details fit.

Detail Your note Bleeding longer than 7 days? yes / no / not sure New pad or tampon in under 2 hours? yes / no / not sure Clots? yes / no / not sure Leaks through clothes or sheets? yes / no / not sure Missed sleep, school, work, or plans? yes / no / not sure

For clot questions, use the period clot and anemia question list.

Short visit script

Copy this if it helps.

Keep the words simple.

You do not need to name a cause.

Result follow up card

Before you leave or send a portal note, ask:

Question Answer Which lab was ordered? When should results arrive? Who will explain them? Should I keep tracking bleeding? What should I track next? What should I keep private?

For ferritin follow up, use the ferritin result question card.

For CBC questions, use the CBC heavy period question list.

Privacy note

Lab notes can include period dates, bleeding, symptoms, clinic names, and result names.

Keep the note short if that is enough.

Before you upload a result, read the lab results period data privacy checklist.
