Endometriosis Ultrasound Question List
A plain question list for endometriosis ultrasound visits, with prompts about what imaging can see, what it can miss, next steps, and tracking after imaging.
Use this before or after an ultrasound for possible endometriosis. It helps you ask clear questions.
It does not read your scan. It does not diagnose endometriosis.
Simple ultrasound notes
Fill in what you know.
Question Your note Why was the ultrasound ordered? What symptoms led to it? What type of ultrasound is planned? Who will explain the result? When will you get results? What follow up is planned?
What ultrasound can help with
NICE says ultrasound can help identify some findings. It can also look for other causes of symptoms.
Ask:
What will this scan look for? Can it look for ovarian endometriomas? Can it look for deep endometriosis? Can it look near the bowel, bladder, or ureter? Can it check for other causes of pain? Does this scan need a specialist reader? Would MRI ever fit my case?
What ultrasound cannot rule out
A normal scan can still leave questions. NICE says endometriosis should not be ruled out only because the exam and ultrasound are normal.
Ask:
If my scan is normal, what does that mean? What can this scan miss? Could symptoms still fit endometriosis? What symptoms would need more follow up? When would referral make sense? When would laparoscopy be discussed?
Do not try to interpret images yourself. Ask the clinician to explain the report in plain words.
Questions for the scan visit
Bring this list to the appointment.
Question Notes What type of ultrasound am I having? What areas will be checked? Will the scan check the ovaries and uterus? Will the scan check for endometriomas? Will the scan look for signs of deep endometriosis? Who reads the scan? Does the reader have pelvic imaging experience? When will I get results? Who should I call if pain gets worse?
Questions for the result visit
Use these when a clinician reviews the report.
What did the scan show? What did the scan not show? Was anything unclear? Does this change my care plan? Do my symptoms still need follow up? Should I see gynecology? Should I see an endometriosis specialist? What should I track before the next visit? What symptoms mean I should call sooner?
If symptoms continue
Ongoing symptoms still matter. A scan is one piece of the visit.
Bring notes about:
Track Why it helps Period start dates Shows cycle timing. Pain days Shows when pain happens. Pain location Shows where pain repeats. Bowel symptoms Shows cycle linked bowel issues. Bladder symptoms Shows cycle linked urinary issues. Missed work, school, sleep, or plans Shows daily impact. Medicines tried Shows what helped or did not help.
Use the endometriosis pain diary, symptom checklist, and bowel and bladder log if you need one page tools.
Privacy notes for imaging follow up
You can bring a short summary instead of a full app export.
Ask:
What data do you need for the follow up? Is a symptom summary enough? Do you need exact dates? Will this export go in my medical record? Can I leave out private notes?
Read period data for endometriosis diagnosis before sharing a full export. For a broader tracking plan, read period tracking for endometriosis and Floriva for endometriosis tracking.
If you are still sorting symptoms, start with intense period pain vs endometriosis. If you are preparing for the first visit, use the endometriosis appointment prep checklist.
