Period Blood Stain Removal Guide
A complete period blood stain removal guide covering sheets, mattresses, clothes, fresh and dried stains, bleach safety, overnight leak patterns, and photo privacy.
Period blood stains happen on sheets, mattresses, and clothes. They do not say anything bad about you.
This guide slows the problem down: cold water first, fabric labels checked, bleach used only when it is safe, and a plan for repeated overnight leaks. It is laundry help, not medical advice. It cannot promise stain removal.
Before you start
Check the fabric care label first. Then fill this in.
Question Your answer What item is stained? sheet / mattress / clothes / other Is the stain fresh or dried? fresh / dried / not sure Can the item be washed? yes / no / not sure Does the label warn against bleach? yes / no / not sure Has the item been through heat already? yes / no / not sure
If the item says dry clean only, stop here and ask the cleaner what they need to know.
Fresh stain checklist
Fresh blood needs cold water first when the fabric allows it. ACI says not to use hot water on fresh blood stains, because hot water can set them.
Step Done Remove the item if you can Rinse or soak with cold water Keep hot water away Wash by the care label Check before drying Repeat if stain remains
Dried stain checklist
Dried stains may need more time. ACI says dried blood stains can be pretreated or soaked in warm water with an enzyme product, then washed, following the fabric label.
Step Done Check the care label Pretreat or soak Use an enzyme product if the label allows it Wash by the care label Check before drying Repeat if stain remains
Do not guess with special fabrics.
Sheets
Start with the layers you can wash. Rinse from the back when you can.
Step Do this Note 1 Take the sheet off the bed Keep the stain away from clean fabric. 2 Check the care tag Use the water and product rules on the tag. 3 Rinse with cold water Rinse from the back when you can. 4 Blot extra water Use a clean towel. Do not scrub hard. 5 Keep it out of heat Do not use the dryer yet.
Bedding item What to check Next step Fitted sheet Care tag, stain spot Cold rinse or soak Flat sheet Care tag, stain spread Cold rinse or wash Pillowcase Hair or skin products Wash by tag Blanket Fabric, fill, dye Spot check first Mattress pad Waterproof layer, care tag Follow tag
Mattress
A mattress can hold moisture, so blot instead of soaking it. Move top to bottom.
Layer What to do Note Sheet Remove and rinse with cold water Follow the tag. Pajamas or underwear Rinse or soak in cold water Follow the tag. Mattress pad Check care tag Wash if tag allows. Mattress protector Check waterproof layer Wash by tag. Mattress spot Blot with a damp cloth Do not soak it.
Spot note Your answer Spot size Still damp? yes / no / not sure Mattress cover removable? yes / no / not sure Care tag found? yes / no Room has fresh air? yes / no Dry time plan
Do not scrub hard. Do not pour water or cleaner directly into the mattress. If the mattress is not washable, keep the note simple and let the spot dry fully.
Clothes
Clothes may need a softer hand.
Item Fabric Care label note Next step Underwear Pants or leggings Skirt or dress Period underwear
Do not scrub hard if the fabric is thin. Do not use bleach unless the item and bleach label allow it.
Bleach and cleaner safety
Bleach is not a first step for every stain, and it is not safe for every fabric. If a stain remains, ACI says a bleach safe for the fabric may be used. CDC says not to mix household bleach or disinfectants with other cleaners or disinfectants.
Safety check Done Read the fabric or cover tag Read the bleach or cleaner label Use fresh air Do not mix cleaners Keep products away from kids or pets Let the item dry fully
If the tag says no bleach, or you are not sure, skip it. Use one product path at a time.

Keep a small kit near the bed if leaks happen often.
Keep a small laundry kit
This kit is for stains only. It does not need to name your period.
Item Pack it? Small wet bag Plain laundry label Spare underwear Cold rinse reminder Fabric care notes Refill card
Use a plain label like "laundry" or "backup." Avoid labels with cycle dates if other people may see them.
If stains keep happening
One leak can happen. Repeated soak through may be worth tracking. This table is for patterns, not diagnosis.
Date Period day Item stained Leak type Product timing Question : underwear / clothes / sheet / mattress spot / leak / soak
CDC lists heavy menstrual bleeding signs that include needing a new pad or tampon after less than 2 hours and soaking through products every hour for several hours. If that fits your pattern, bring a short note to a visit use Floriva for gynecologist prep or the heavy period and clot tracker for a fuller symptom log.

Privacy note
Laundry and leak notes can reveal cycle dates, flow, sleep, school, work, travel, and product use. A stain photo can also show more than the stain a bed, room, address label, or time.
Before you save or share a photo, check whether location is saved with it, whether the room is easy to identify, and whether it will land in a shared album or backup.
Keep the smallest note that helps. Before sharing product notes, read the period product symptom data privacy checklist. Before saving leak photos, read the period leak photo location privacy checklist.
Floriva can hold a short reminder on your device. No app can control screenshots, exports, backups, shared devices, or photo apps.
